OUR HISTORY THROUGH THE YEARS

Built on Faith & Community (1872 – Present)

The story of Candler UMC is woven directly into the history of South Hall County. Long before paved roads or modern developments, our community began coming together along the local railroad line to build spaces for faith, fellowship, and learning.

1872–1885: A Community Foundation

In the late 19th century, as Candlers Station grew along the Gainesville, Jefferson & Southern Railroad, local neighbors pooled their resources to support local families. On January 1, 1885, community members purchased a half-acre lot to construct a two-story wooden building. This shared space served as both the Literary School of Candler by day and the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 13 by night—establishing a deep tradition of local education and service.

1887: The Church is Born

Recognizing the need for a dedicated spiritual home, local families gathered on July 17, 1887, under Rev. S. H. Braswell to officially charter the Candler Methodist Episcopal Church South. Charter families, including the Bates, Cobb, Simmons, Heely, Little, and Cox families, purchased two acres adjacent to the schoolhouse to build our original sanctuary.

1913: Unifying Our Grounds

As Hall County's public school system expanded, the trustees of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Literary School formally conveyed the original schoolhouse lot to the church in January 1913, unifying the property into one permanent home. Later that year, attorney Hammond Johnson confirmed our clear title, securing the grounds for generations to come.

1957 – 2010s: Adapting Through Generations

Throughout the 20th century, our congregation grew alongside national Methodist denominational mergers and adopted the name Candler United Methodist Church in 1968. In 1957, during the creation of Lake Lanier, our church grounds served as a sacred resting place when graves from the flooded Duncan Cemetery were relocated to the ridge behind our sanctuary.

Navigating COVID-19: Faith Beyond Walls

When the global COVID-19 pandemic reshaped church life everywhere in 2020, Candler faced the same isolation that challenged faith communities worldwide. Though pews sat empty for a season, our mission never stopped. We embraced new ways to worship and creative community outreach, learning in a powerful new way that the true church is not defined by four walls, but by the love and connection of its people.

Standing Firm Through the UMC Split

In recent years, as the United Methodist Church experienced widespread denominational division and disaffiliation, Candler stood at a historic crossroads alongside thousands of congregations nationwide. Through thoughtful prayer, open dialogue, and a commitment to unity, our congregation chose to remain anchored in our identity. We chose grace over division and kept our doors open to all people. Navigating this season brought newfound clarity and reaffirmed our mission to be a loving, inclusive sanctuary for South Hall County.

2026: A Bold, Unanimous Declaration of Grace

In 2026, Candler UMC took a historic step forward. In a landmark moment for our congregation, the church voted unanimously to officially become a safe, affirming, and welcoming place of worship for:

  • The LGBTQ+ Community: Affirming every individual as a fully embraced, beloved child of God.

  • Those Who Have Experienced Church Hurt: Offering a healing sanctuary free from judgment, shame, or condemnation.

  • Those Battling Addiction: Providing a compassionate, supportive community to walk alongside you in recovery and grace.

Today: A Revitalized Future

Having weathered global health crises and denominational shifts, Candler UMC enters a dynamic new season of renewal and growth. With a renewed emphasis on hospitality, community connection, and inclusive faith, we honor our 135-year legacy by actively building a brighter, more connected future.
